Roland Cabot is a French-Brazilian multidisciplinary artist to be rediscovered. The beginnings of his career in the 1950s were marked by his research into abstraction before he turned away from it and settled on a figurative art form in which he found greater recognition. Cabot then developed a passion for etching and produced many figurative prints throughout his career. It was during this period that his institutional recognition began, notably when the prestigious MoMa in New York welcomed a still life engraved around 1964 into its collection. During his career, his works were exhibited in numerous museums and galleries, including the Denise René Gallery in 2004. After his work on painted wood, Roland Cabot turned at the end of the 70s to sculpture in painted steel sheets, and worked on the geometrisation of the line and the decoration. His totems are more stripped down and less colourful than the painted wood of the previous period. Cabot experiments with the dialogue between solids and voids, between the warm matte surfaces of the paint and the cold shiny surfaces of the steel sheets left bare.
