School of the XIXth century - Lot 9
School of the XIXth century Riders in the Forest or Hunting Oil on panel H: 14,7cm ; W: 24,5cm NOTES: The fashion of equestrian sports and hunting with hounds was imported from England at the end of the 18th century and was initially adopted by aristocrats, such as the Duke of Orleans, to become popular until it became a theme in 19th century painting. Thus, many artists tried their hand at this theme. Some, such as Alfred de Dreux or Charles Alfred de Condamy, made it their speciality, while others, such as Gustave Courbet or Maurice Denis, used it in their avant-garde pictorial research. Thus, this elegant composition, if it is the work of an anonymous master, remains a charming testimony of the craze for hunting in the 19th century. It will delight both hunting enthusiasts and collectors of landscape paintings, by the clarity and softness of the colors as well as its finesse of realization.
