Georges MATHIEU (1921-2012). - Lot 13
Georges MATHIEU (1921-2012). Uxelles. Oil on canvas signed and dated "70" on the lower right. Titled on the frame on the reverse. Provenance : Veranneman gallery in Brussels (label on the back) and private collection until today. H. 89 cm ; W. 146 cm. A pioneer of French lyrical abstraction, Georges Mathieu positioned himself in the 1950s as the heir to Jackson Pollock's research in France. Since the 1950s, Mathieu has been recognized by the French state and institutions, and has offered part of his art to the general public by creating, for example, the Antenne 2 logo or posters for Air France. This work, characteristic of his energetic gestures, was created in the 1970s. Its red background and the play of colours on the canvas lead to the consecration of the violent harmony of this painter.
