Charlotte Perriand, a leading figure in the world of design, has been the subject of numerous retrospectives, most recently at the Louis Vuitton Foundation in 2019. She began her career in France between the wars and was quickly noticed by wealthy patrons, including the Noailles family, but also by Le Corbusier, who saw the artist's potential and decided to include her in his team. Perriand took up the challenge and participated in the creation of some of the world's most important designs, including the famous "LC4" chaise longue. In the 1940s, the designer travels to Japan. She abandoned tubular steel in favour of natural materials, in which light-coloured wood took pride of place. The "Berger" stools are characteristic of this research. Commissioned to create the furnishings for the Meribel ski resorts, the designer found the inspiration for these stools when she saw a shepherd sitting milking cows in the mountains. They are thus a precious testimony of this return to vernacular inspirations which will make school with the designers of the years 1940-1950.
