Leon ABRY (1857-1905) - Lot 32
Leon ABRY (1857-1905) The horse that wins the oats. Oil on canvas signed and dated "April 78 H: 46 cm W: 56 cm (without frame) H: 65 cm W: 69,5 cm (with frame) History: Probably exhibited at the Cercle artistique d'Anvers in 1878 NOTES: An Antwerp artist of the late 19th century, Léon Abry specialized in paintings and prints depicting military scenes and portraits, some of which are held in the British Museum and the Royal Museums of Belgium. This painting is part of a realist trend, both in terms of the workmanship and the irony and cynicism of the subject. Titled "The horse that wins the oats", from a Belgian proverb "It's not always the horse that wins the oats that eats it", the painting illustrates a young man applying himself to the editing of an accounting document, probably for an employer more fortunate than him! Bibliography: - "He attended the lessons of the teachers of the Antwerp academy, had success as a student and made his debut by showing the public The Horse that Wins the Oats, exhibited at the Artistic Circle of Antwerp, in 1878, an essay which was noticed." Flemish Art, Volume VI, Contemporary Artists Part 2. Text by Jules Du Jardin, drawings by Josef Middeleer, Arthur Boitte éditeur, Brussels, 1896.
