NOTES: A French painter from the north of France, Edouard Pignon is to be compared to the New School of Paris, a heterogeneous group of modern artists operating in France after the Second World War. Although he was deeply influenced by abstract painting, he never totally abandoned figuration: he painted series, often on realistic themes. The work for sale is part of the "Ostend" series, in which the artist reconnects with his origins by showing the port of the Belgian city, close to his birthplace. It can be compared with works from the same series held at the Centre Georges Pompidou.
