Rupert CARABIN (1862-1932) - Lot 23
Rupert CARABIN (1862-1932) The effort Bronze proof with brown patina, signed on the left on the terrace. Marble base with title card. Height without base : 53 cm Slight shock to the right elbow NOTES: A true UFO of the late 19th century, Rupert Carabin was a jack-of-all-trades artist who tried his hand at many artistic techniques. A precursor of Art Nouveau, he was acclaimed by insiders for his furniture with licentious female sculptures, which is presented in the greatest Parisian collections (Musée d'Orsay, Petit Palais and Musée des Arts décoratifs). But Rupert Carabin also mastered bronze techniques to perfection, as shown by the print presented in this catalogue depicting an allegory of effort in the guise of a naked woman. Close to the artistic milieu of Montmartre, a night owl and Toulouse-Lautrec's companion with whom he frequented cabarets, cafés and brothels on the hilltop, Rupert Carabin modelled the "fallen women" he met during his nocturnal wanderings in the wood of his furniture but also in his bronzes. A rare work, of museum quality, by an astonishing artist to be rediscovered.
