Maurice ROGER MARX (1872 - 1956) - Lot 27
Maurice ROGER MARX (1872 - 1956) Squirrels with pine cones. Sculpture, direct carving, in marble signed on the terrace lower left. Signed " RM_MARX_" H: 36 cm ; W: 68 cm ; D: 23 cm Slightly missing and slightly restored. Breche marble base with cut sides H: 5 cm ; W: 55 cm ; D: 30 cm NOTES: Maurice Roger Marx, an animal sculptor of the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, was a student of Louis-Ernest Barrias. He entered into the posterity by realizing in bronze the Peugeot Lion, mascot of the famous car manufacturer. Here, he delivers an astonishing piece, as much by the theme of squirrels, rare in animal sculpture, as by a technical prowess. Indeed, the sculptor has privileged the difficulty by realizing, with his tools and directly on the marble, a proof in direct size, without any possibility of repentance in case of failure. An object as original as it is virtuoso.
