GARNIER (Charles Georges Thomas collected by). Imaginary journeys, dreams, visions and cabalistic novels. Amsterdam and Paris, Rue et Hôtel Serpente (1787-1789), 1789, 39 vol. in-8, marbled calf, triple gilt fillet on plates, smooth spine with green morocco title and tomaison pieces, gilt decoration, tr. jaspées (rel. de l'ép.). Illustrated with 76 engravings by Berthet, Viguet, Delvaux, Levillain after MARILLIER. Garnier's collection, "which had just published Le Cabinet des fées, is the first to offer a wide choice of conjectural works of fiction, rational or not." It offers the reader 74 different texts, 37 of which are utopias, allegories, extraordinary journeys and scientific anticipations. It is "the" basic collection on the subject, the complete list of which is given by Pierre Versins in his Encyclopedia of Utopia and Science Fiction (1972, p. 944). Rare set in period uniform binding.
