Gaston ROULLET, (1847-1925). "The Shamraer", Halong Bay, Tonkin. Oil on canvas depicting the mythical Halong Bay with its agitation around the ship on the left hand side, contrasting with the calm of the rocky peaks planted in the sea on the right hand side. Signed and titled lower right: Gaston Roullet "The Shamraer", Halong Bay, Tonkin. H.55 cm, W. 32.5 cm. Some small accidents. Note: Gaston Roullet is a French painter born on the island of Ré and having studied with Jules Noël. He was appointed official painter of the colonies and the navy in 1885. It is within this framework that he took part in the military campaigns of Tonkin with the mission of making drawings. He later received the Legion of Honour from the Ministry of Colonies.
